§ Rabbit rabbit. Happy June.
§ Although most of the garden is still in its nascent stage, our parsley plant is a monster. We harvested two cups of it for homemade chimichurri and the plant still looks more or less untouched.
§ We also are just now getting our first few tiny ripe strawberries.
§ I went back to Oxbow Orchard on Thursday where I finally (inevitably) caved on my nightshade ban and bought a groundcherry(!), cherry tomato, chili pepper plant. I’ll be keeping them in pots, at least.
§ After getting my first lawn mower last month, I decided to pick up an electric edger/string trimmer combo tool over the Memorial Day weekend. I’ve never felt more suburban than this.
§ You know how I mentioned recently that my wife and I were going to visit Mackinac Island to celebrate our first wedding anniversary? Well, further research led us to realize that Mackinac hotels are criminally expensive and that direct flights from Cleveland to Ireland are surprisingly affordable so… we bought the tickets! We’re going to Dublin at the end of July! It will be my first time in Europe—in fact, it will be my first time outside of North America. I’m unbelievably excited.
§ Preparing for the trip, I’ve never been more tempted to upgrade my camera. Unfortunately, while the plane tickets were cheap they weren’t that cheap so my trusty X100f will have to do.
§ I finished watching the first season of The Studio, which was excellent. As was Matt Belloni’s interview with the show’s creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
I found it particularly interesting that Goldberg mentioned the theory behind the show’s unique cinematography—long continuous takes shot from close cameras with wide lenses—was to intentionally break from the predictability inherent to the traditional wide-medium-close shot cadence in order to hold viewer’s increasingly frayed attention for longer. Personally, I think it totally works.
§ The second season of The Rehearsal was more ridiculous and more ambitious than the first. It’s still one of the most difficult shows to recommend to others—how can you possibly describe it succinctly without sounding insane?
§ After what felt like an eternity of repetitive character exposition, The Stand finally hooked me somewhere around chapter thirteen.
§ Once again, my yard has turned into a deer nursery. It was this same week last year that we discovered our first newborn deer in a nearby patch of backyard brush. Little coincidences like this are at least half of the reason why I enjoy writing these weeknotes.
