§ Fall weather watch: temperatures were in the 60s and 70s all week. I broke out my sweaters from storage and wore a different one each day. We turned off the air conditioning and left the windows open day and night. The trees still have yet to loose their leaves but our sweet autumn clematis has finally started blooming.

§ I saw a waterspout over Lake Erie for the first time Monday morning.

§ Out in the cooler weather I’ve been trying my best to process as much as I can of the enormous oak limb that fell last week.

Long thin branches get added to the wattle fence, nice even logs get de-barked and set aside for drying, and miscellaneous irregular bits get chopped up for firewood. This is all made drastically harder by not having a proper chainsaw.

By the end of the week, it was finally determined that the entire giant old oak tree will unfortunately need to be cut down. All the more unfortunate was the realization that the only way to safely take down the old oak required also cutting down my favorite black gum tree in front of it.

Over the weekend my backyard was slowly filled with more and more industrial arborist equipment, like enormous alien insects.

§ As is tradition, Labor Day weekend means it’s time for the county fair. Caroline and I went for dinner after work on Friday. After some barbecue we walked through the various animal barns. This year’s favorite was easily a particularly precocious Nubian goat.

§ I’m off work tomorrow for Labor Day and am very much looking forward to the three-day weekend.
