§ On Monday I went back to work after a blissful two weeks off. It look me a surprisingly long time to get back into the swing of things but by Friday I finally felt like I was mostly back in sync.

§ Undeterred by the unconscionably hot weather, I went out on a couple of long-ish hikes through Holden Arboretum and some of the recently-built trails of a new Metropark. I’m trying my best to keep up my holiday step count but the ~20 °F warmer temperatures here are not making it easy.

§ So, have our pattypan squash plants followed the same pattern as last year: great growth throughout July followed by a rapid decline in August?

Sort of? The plants on the sunny side of the house grew fast and are now starting to look pretty sad—although they are still flowering!

The plants on the shadier side of the house have grown much slower but look great now. I just harvest our first little squash from it.

I’m going to try to see if I can replicate this system in the garden next year.

§ I’m struck that, although Ireland is smaller than Ohio, it has such an enormous variety of things to see. Despite spending almost two weeks in the country we saw only a tiny portion of what the country has to offer. Maybe I’m being unfair to Ohio here but it just doesn’t seem like we have anywhere close to that level of interesting things to see. I should travel more.

§ After returning home from our trip, we had huge harvests from two different plants in our garden: green beans and lavender. Caroline and I promptly ate the beans but I still don’t know what we are going to do with this mountain of lavender.
